The Role of the DRS Flap In F1®, the DRS, or Drag Reduction System, is a moveable flap of bodywork that is built into the rear wing of the car. Its purpose is to reduce aerodynamic drag and increase speed in a straight line. When activated in DRS Zones, the flap opens to create a gap in the wing which allows air to flow more freely and reduce downforce. This action gives the driver a speed boost, which is why you see it being used on straights and in prime overtaking opportunities. However, DRS can’t be used at just any moment. There are specific conditions in which this special feature can be activated... During the race, drivers must be within one second of the car ahead whilst also in the designated DRS detection points, in order to benefit from DRS. Red Bull Racing’s 2015 Campaign The 2015 driver line-up consisted of Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo who had been paired together for the first time. Whilst not producing the same dominance as in previous seasons, the RB11 was still a fierce competitor. The team claimed three podium positions during the season, with Kvyat finishing second in Hungary with Ricciardo in third for a double podium, and Ricciardo clinching a further second place podium in Singapore. The team finished the season in fourth in the Constructors’ Championship. A True Tribute This DRS Flap was part of the team’s historic journey.
