Early Wonder Camellia (Japonica)

Early Wonder Camellia (Japonica)

The Early Wonder® Camellia from the Southern Living Plant Collection is a brand-new selection for 2019! This is a Camellia japonica variety, therefore, it has many of the qualities people love about this breed of plants. However, most Japonica varieties begin blooming in late fall to early winter, and that's where the Early Wonder breaks the mold. This selection begins blooming in Fall, a time when traditionally only Camellia sasanqua varieties are in bloom! And these flowers are absolute show-stoppers. Each bloom is a large, formal, and rosy pink with double petals. You won't get tired of looking at these blossoms anytime soon, which is good because they emerge in huge numbers. The Early Wonder Camellia produces leathery, dark green leaves with lightly serrated edges. This foliage is evergreen and grows naturally in an upright habit. This variety reaches a mature height of 6-8' H x 4-6' W, so be sure to leave room for it to grow. The Early Wonder Camellia is a perfect choice for a specimen, accent, mass planting, hedge, or even privacy planting. Check out few other new Southern Living Plant Collection Camellias, the Christmas Carol Camellia, the October Magic Carpet Camellia, and the October Magic White Shi Shi Camellia. Early Wonder Camellia Care Hardy from USDA Zones 7-9, down to 0°F when fully established in the landscape. Plant in Full Sun to Partial Shade for best results, at least 3-4 hours of direct sun a day. Too little sun results in decreased foliage and bloom production. Water 2-3 times per week during the first growing season while experiencing average weather conditions. During the second season, provide 1-2 supplementary waterings weekly. The Early Wonder Camellia, like other camellias, prefers slightly acidic soil with good drainage. If you don't know your soil pH, consider picking up a pH tester. If the pH is too high, supplement your soil with elemental sulfur to lower it. Fertilize yearly with either a slow-release acidic plant fertilizer or an organic acidic plant fertilizer.

October Magic White Shi Shi Camellia (Sasanqua)

October Magic White Shi Shi Camellia (Sasanqua)

The brand new October Magic White Shi Shi Camellia from the Southern Living Plant Collection provides a unique twist on the classic Shi Shi Gashira Camellia! Gorgeous white, double blooms emerge from October to January. While the rest of your landscape is gearing down for a long, chilly winter, the White Shi Shi Camellia is just getting started! Like its namesake, the Shi Shi Gashira Camellia, the October Magic White Shi Shi Camellia features a naturally compact growth habit. This white bloom camellia maxes out at around 3-4' H x 3-4' W. Therefore, it's perfect for a low-maintenance low hedge or border. Try the White Shi Shi Camellia as an accent, container, mass planting, or slope planting. This selection features notable disease and pest resistance, as well as impressive heat tolerance. Additionally, the October Magic White Shi Shi Camellia is more tolerant of clay soils than most varieties. Sturdy branches and evergreen foliage make the White Shi Shi Camellia popular with local birds. Plant 30-36" apart for a seamless hedge of foliage. Space 48" or more apart for space between plants. October Magic White Shi Shi Camellia Care Hardy from USDA Zones 7-9. Prefers Full Sun to Partial Shade, around 4-6 hours of sun a day. Insufficient sunlight will result in reduced bloom and foliage potential. However, too much sun can cause undue stress to the October Magic White Shi Shi Camellia. Grows best in slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Water regularly until established, 2-3 times a week during the first growing season. Increase the watering frequency in dry weather and decrease the frequency during heavy rain periods. Fertilize with an acidic plant fertilizer in spring after the threat of frost has passed. Topdressing the soil underneath your October Magic White Shi Shi Camellia yearly with a couple of inches of composted manure, such as Black Kow, will keep your soil rich and healthy. If needed, prune in late winter before new foliage flushes out.

Living Christmas Tree - Dwarf Alberta Spruce

Living Christmas Tree - Dwarf Alberta Spruce

This living Christmas tree, a Dwarf Alberta Spruce with a decorative burlap wrap, is a wonderfully festive accent for your holiday decorating. The tree is rooted in the soil and shipped with a decorative burlap wrap and red bow. Use it on patios to frame an entrance, or bring it inside to flank your fireplace. Add lights or small decorations to complete the look and compliment your existing decor. After the holidays, plant your living Christmas tree in your landscape. This conifer tree is a reliable evergreen landscape fixture that never fails to provide a classic touch all year long. Dense needle foliage is soft to the touch with an eye-catching blueish-green tint. Additionally, this conifer features a naturally pyramidal growth habit, with very little, if any, pruning needed to maintain its form. It naturally maxes out at around 6-8' H 4-5' W. A slow-growing nature makes trimming infrequent, which means this plant is ideal for topiaries and container garden specimens. Use it as a screen. Once it reaches an appropriate height, its foliage is impenetrable to the eye. Likewise, the wind will find it difficult to pass through a mature specimen. Expect birds to find shelter and places to raise their young in these beauties. Living Christmas Tree Care This Spruce is primarily suited for colder climates, specifically USDA Zones 3-8. Once fully established, it can withstand temperatures between -40° and -30° F (now that's what I call chilly). Plant this tree in Full Sun to partial shade for best results. Water frequently during the first year after planting, 2-3 times per week during average weather conditions, to establish a healthy root system. This will help ensure its success in the years to come. Fertilize with a high-nitrogen acidic fertilizer in early spring, preferably before it has started to flush out with new growth. Furthermore, reapply fertilizer again at the beginning of summer to encourage faster growth. Popular Spruce Tree Companion Plants In many ways, the sky is the limit regarding what goes well with this tree. We recommend planting it with some other cold-hardy evergreens with great texture for a unique rock garden appeal. For instance, the Gold Mop False Cypress really shines alongside it. They both have a slow-growth habit, dynamite texture, and effortless elegance. The Fire Chief Arborvitae and Pancake Arborvitae have similar effects when planted with it. Alternatively, Groundcover Junipers go beautifully with them as well. Need a bloomer to go with your Spruces too? Rhododendrons like the Southgate Radiance Rhododendron or Southgate Brandi Rhododendron are perfect accents thanks to their thick leaves and gorgeous flowers.

Purple Pixie Dwarf Weeping Loropetalum

Purple Pixie Dwarf Weeping Loropetalum

The Purple Pixie® Loropetalum from the Southern Living Plant Collection is a Loropetalum like no other! This evergreen features rich, eggplant-purple leaves that last all year long. However, what separates the Purple Pixie from the pack is its naturally weeping foliage. When used in the landscape, it forms an attractive mound of purple foliage. Furthermore, this Loropetalum truly shines in hanging baskets, window boxes, and other containers that allow the drooping foliage to cascade over the edges. Gorgeous elliptical leaves dangle gracefully while simultaneously adding a whole new level of color interest to the landscape and/or planter. Besides dynamite foliage color, this variety features brilliant pink ribbon blooms as well. An initial considerable display of blossoms appears in spring. Afterward, this weeping Loropetalum will periodically rebloom through fall with smaller flower displays. The Purple Pixie grows to 1-2 feet H x 4-5 feet W. Therefore, it's perfect for a groundcover. This Loropetalum is more deer resistant than your average plant, however, it's not deer-proof. Other than a container planting, some popular uses for the Purple Pixie Loropetalum are as an accent, mass planting, or slope planting. Purple Pixie Loropetalum Care Hardy from USDA Zones 7-10. We do recommend providing winter precautions during hard freezes in the first growing season, i.e. cover with freeze-cloth or a tarp overnight. Prefers Partial to Full Sun. However, gardeners in the deep south of the United States should try to shield the Purple Pixie Loropetalum from intense afternoon sunlight. Grows best in rich, slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Loropetalums may experience root rot when planted in soil with poor drainage. Water 3-4 times per week during the first growing season to help the Purple Pixie grow extensive roots and improve its chances of long-term success. During the second growing season, supplementary water 2-3 times per week is generally sufficient. Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, in early spring to promote growth and the overall health of your plant. Companion Plants: This selection's bold evergreen color creates a fantastic contrast with many many different types of plants. It pairs well with almost any type of Gardenia, thanks to their bright white flowers and the fact that they grow well in similar conditions. Try planting it with some brilliantly colored evergreens, such as the Lemon Lime Nandina or the Sunshine Ligustrum. Either of these will contrast beautifully with the rich purple leaves of the Pixie. It’s very practical and yet the results are still top-tier. If you don’t have the space, time, or energy for a full Gongfu-style tea set, this is for you. I keep one of these on my desk at home in case I need to really get work done and can’t do the whole tea ceremony, and I also have a second set just for traveling and taking to friends’ houses. One note - because this set doesn’t come with a pitcher, you need to be sure to only add as much water as you need to drink your next cup. Otherwise, you will be left with extra tea inside the pot which keeps over-steeping. Don’t Forget Your Tea Pets! It’s not gongfu tea time without a tea pet!
