Nature was a form of religion for naturalist, essayist, and early environmentalist Henry David Thoreau (1817–62). In communing with the natural world, he wished to "live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and … learn what it had to teach." Toward that end Thoreau built a cabin in the spring of 1845 on the shores of Walden Pond — on land owned by Ralph Waldo Emerson — outside Concord, Massachusetts. There he observed nature, farmed, built fences, surveyed, and wrote in his journal. One product of his two-year sojourn was this book — a great classic of American letters. Interwoven with accounts of Thoreau's daily life (he received visitors and almost daily walked into Concord) are mediations on human existence, society, government, and other topics, expressed with wisdom and beauty of style.Walden offers abundant evidence of Thoreau's ability to begin with observations on a mundane incident or the minutiae of nature and then develop these observations into profound ruminations on the most fundamental human concerns. Credited with influencing Tolstoy, Gandhi, and other thinkers, the volume remains a masterpiece of philosophical reflection.A selection of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.Reprint of the Ticknor and Fields, Boston, 1854 edition. essay civil;merrimack rivers;american canon;transcendentalist movement;mohandas gandhi;live deep;poll tax;easton press;live deliberately;mahatma gandhi;living simply;land owned;observing nature;american letters;26 months;live simply;maine woods;natural life;lead lives;pay taxes;150th anniversary;morning star;american lit;live lives;explanatory notes;civilized society;civil disobedience;american classic;simpler life;quality paper;rat race;material possessions;quiet desperation;industrial revolution;cape cod;modern life;luther king;martin luther;natural world;modern day;a-fishing;waldon;thoreauvian;nonconformity;transcendentalism;transcendentalists;self-sufficiency;ponds;governs;1845;1854;self-reliance;transcendental;concord;marrow;simplify;annotations;drummer;abolitionist;naturalist;annotated;visitors;solitude;philosopher;cabin;simplicity;experiment;jon krakauer;henry thoreau;philip van doren;walden;john muir;ralph waldo emerson;walter harding;john brown;scott miller;mexico;fitchburg;washington;africa;texas;alaska;united states india;america;new england;books on american classics;observe nature;books on morning stars;books on mahatma gandhi;books on live lives;books on american letters;books on mohandas gandhi;books on 150th anniversaries;books on lead lives;books on merrimack rivers;books on easton presses;books on explanatory notes;books on natural lives;books on maine woods;books on observing natures;books on american canons;books on poll taxes;books on pay taxes
